Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)
WWP is the post-9/11 generation's big service organization: mental health, physical wellness, financial wellness, and lifelong care for wounded, ill, and injured veterans — with one eligibility line that surprises people: a VA disability rating is not required, and neither is a deployment. Family members and caregivers register in their own right.
- Founded: 2003, Roanoke, Virginia
- Status: 501(c)(3) charity (no congressional charter)
- Headquarters: Jacksonville, Florida
- Reach: “more than 300,000 post-9/11 veterans and their families” served (WWP’s own figure)
- Website: woundedwarriorproject.org
Who it serves
Veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness, or wound on or after September 11, 2001, in connection with military service. Family members and caregivers of a wounded warrior may also be eligible, registering as Family Support Members. Registration is free, and WWP states warriors never pay for its programs and services.
Note the era line honestly: a Vietnam-era veteran like this site’s founding veteran is outside WWP’s registration window. His post-9/11 children, grandchildren, and fellow caregivers are not — and several programs here (the Resource Center’s guidance among them) are the first phone call many younger families make.
What it does
Program areas as WWP names them: Get Connected, Mental Health, Physical Wellness, Financial Wellness, and Lifelong Care. Named services include the Warrior Care Network (intensive trauma care with four academic medical centers), the Independence Program (for the most severely wounded, including caregiver and family support), the Alumni Connection Program, benefits-claims support (WWP cites over $263.8 million in benefits secured for veterans last year), and career coaching — coordinated through the WWP Resource Center.
